MISSION TO: Bicol Regional Training & Teaching Hospital Heart Center (BRTTH)

Legazpi City, Bicol Region, Philippines  •  February 2-15, 2020

LEGPAZI CITY, “The City of fun and adventure”.

Legpazi City is the regional center and largest city of the Bicol Region.  According to the last census it has a population of 196,639 people.  It is the region’s center of tourism, education, health services commerce and transportation.  This city is home to Mt. Mayon, a 20 million –year-old volcano that offers both wild adventure and captivating history.  There is a lot of history and culture to be experienced right in the city.  Many monuments, including the Franciscan Church, the Spanish Pier and the Japanese Tunnels.  More on the fun later, business first.

This will be CardioStart’s first mission to the Philippines!  And you are invited!!!

The mission is sponsored by New Jersey Rotary 7476 Gift of Life Foundation. The Foundation will fund the team transportation, housing and most meals for the mission. 

CardioStart will perform adult heart surgery and interventional cardiology at the new Heart Center at (BRTTH).  The Bicol Regional Heart Center is new for this 100-year-old hospital.  Opened in February of 2019, this government hospital is equipped with state of the art equipment, which will save many patients from costly trips to Manila for treatment.  The Center expects about 4,000 patients a year from all over Bicol and neighboring provinces.  The center boasts a full catheterization lab for angiogram, angioplasty, pacemaker insertions.  Three surgical suites furnished to perform CABG and Open Heart Surgery.  There are 9 coronary care units to provide patient recovery.

MISSION PLAN: 

Team arrival by Sunday, February 2, 2020.  (Orientation at 6 PM with patient review).

Monday, February 3rd– OR /ICU set up and dry run.  (If all in order, surgery will proceed).

The mission will end February 15th, 2020.  Volunteers will be free to tour or leave on that day.

HOW TO APPLY TO JOIN THE TEAM:

Please go to www.cardiostart.org to apply to participate in the mission.  Please note the positions open will only be the ones filled.  It will be done on a first come-first serve basis.  You will be informed of your acceptance and documents needed to proceed.  DO NOT purchase an airline tickets for the mission. 

AFTER THE MISSION:

A number of adventure tourism activities exist withint the city including ATV riding around Mt. Mayon, zip lining, skydiving, scuba diving and water sports.  Hiking and climbing of Mt. Mayon is allowed during its peaceful spells.  The best attractions include:
