MISSION # 61

CARDIAC PROGRAM BUILDING

IN

SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

APRIL 2014

In collaboration with Heart Care Dominica (HCD), CardioStart International returned to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic for another successful heart surgery mission. The mission took place at Corozones Unidos Hospital with a focus on adult patient cardiac surgery and education. With an international team of 20 volunteers and the local team this new program was a success. Six patients were chosen to receive life-saving heart surgery during the 6-day mission. As of this writing all were progressing well despite these being complex cases. The educational initiatives of this mission were well received and added to the success of the mission. The formal education program included updated Basic Life Support (BLS) and pearls of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Hands-on practice sessions and return demonstration solidified the learning experience. A dynamic program of primary assessment gave the physicians and nurses essential skills in assessment and focus Bedside teaching in the operating theater and ICU rounded off the education provided by the entire team.
