Shari Maquire, a retired entrepreneur who owned two retail clothing stores is using her expertise to the great benefit of CardioStart by creating the first CardioStart retail store. “CardioStart ReSale Thrift” is it’s own non-profit entity, separate from CardioStart International but who’s primary purpose is to support the charity. The store, relying on donated items from volunteers, the general public as well as specialty items picked up on missions which will be sold with the proceeds going to the charity.
In the past, CardioStart has managed to find local artisans in the poverty stricken areas we serve and purchase their goods. These items are often impossible to get in the US and truly give a cultural and sometimes spiritual tie between the artist and the end purchaser, many thousands of miles away. We’re sure these items, along with what’s donated in the states will keep the customers coming.
“I have an incentive plan for those who donate,” Maguire said. “You bring us donations, we give you credits towards your next purchase in the store. The volunteers can take whatever they want home at no charge -but need to bring something back of equal value so Cardiostart can still benefit.
The store, a work in progress will have a Western section, antique low-end-price section, vintage wear, household goods -all year long, not just periodically.
Shari plans to go on a mission as soon as she feels the store is stable and that she can leave for a few weeks. When you see her in the field be sure to say hi! In the mean time, take a trip around your house and see what you can send her. Any higher-end donation would be appreciated such as name brand clothing, gourmet cooking gear, etc…
In the Sisters area? Donations and volunteers are requested and appreciated! Just phone ahead and come by the shop between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The store is located in the 3 Wind Shopping Center in Sisters, Shari can be reached via email here.
