Dr. Candace Dick, a busy Cardiologist with the University of MN Physicians has a heart to help others. Unfortunately, she is not at a place in her life where she can take time out of her practice to accompany a mission. This hurdle does not stop her from making an ongoing contribution to the care of poor heart patients in developing countries.
Dr. Dick asked team coordinator Tien Truong what she needed for the 2011 Vietnam mission. Tien sheepishly asked her for an echocardiography machine. The good Doctor did not hesitate to make it happen. Dr. Dick collaborated with GE representative Dallen and Dr. Broccard, intensivist to determine the ideal instrument for bedside echocardiography. With the midnight deadline, delivery was expedited to arrive the day before team departure.
Dr. Alain Broccard, Intensive Care Medical Director for University of Minnesota/Fairview Southdale, personally taught the local Vietnamese Intensive care specialists in its use. During the two-week mission they were even able to avert a complication with its use. The handheld device now resides in the South Vietnam province hospital continuing to make a difference in lives every day.
